Nintendo announced that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will have a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition that offers an additional control option and quality / performance graphics modes.
In the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Beyond, you’ll be able to play the game using the Joy-Con controller’s mouse functionality. I’m curious to try that out — seems like it could be a great way to navigate through the game.
As for the graphics options, the quality mode will let you play at 4K and 60fps with HDR while docked and at 1080p and 60fps with HDR in handheld mode. The performance mode will let you play at 1080p and 120fps with HDR while docked and 720p and 120fps with HDR in handheld mode.
The news follows a major new look at the game during last week’s Nintendo Direct. A trailer shown at the event showed off the planet the game takes place in, called Viewros, and Samus Aran’s new physic powers that she’ll use to fight enemies and solve puzzles. That trailer said that the game would be launching at an unspecified time in 2025.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond’s development has been a long road. The game was first revealed soon after the original Switch was released in 2017. But Nintendo announced in early 2019 that it would be rebooting the title with Retro Studios on board. Nintendo finally showed off gameplay footage of the game last year, and it looked quite promising then.
If you’re in the mood for more Metroid while we wait for Beyond, Metroid Prime Remastered, released in 2023, is an excellent remaster of the original classic.
